Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

During Parent- Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), parents learn play therapy skills to enhance their parent-child relationships. Parents also learn to manage their child’s behaviors through behavioral principles. Therapists will work with your family until your child’s behaviors at home improve.

*TeleHealth/Virtual Therapy is available for families during this time.

Who can participate?

  • The program is specifically designed for children with behavioral issues between the ages of 2 and 7.
  • Children who display negative behaviors at home, school, daycare and in public.
  • All caregivers of the identified child are welcome to participate. This includes parents, grandparents, daycare providers, teachers, nannies, etc.
  • PCIT addresses nearly all mental health disorders including attachment, opposition, attention deficit and adjustment.

PCIT in 2 Parts

Treatment typically lasts 12 to 18 weeks and parents are asked to complete special play time assignments with their children between sessions.

Making the Relationship Strong

Parents are “coached” on how to increase the positive aspects of their relationships with their child. They learn to develop consistent, positive and supportive patters of communication.

Behavior Modification

In the Discipline component of the program, parents are “coached” on the use of effective communication and child management skills. In both components of the program, parents are given the opportunity to practice their new skills during training sessions until mastery is reached and the child’s behavior has improved.
